David Lee is one of those people that I’ve been fortunate to know through my work. He’s the brother of Ronnie Lee, is a photographer of some renown, and a mentor to many of us.
The following conversation was originally published in the Nyrd Museum’s Blast Magazine in the Fall of 2014.
The first time I came to meet David Lee was at the annual Nyrd Basement Arts Party. There were live bands, performances by students, and an art gallery of work by local artists. My first time, I asked the friend I was with what I should see. I was told that David Lee’s work would be pretty interesting.
He wasn’t kidding. David’s work was the featured artwork for the night, and the Nyrd Basement Arts are always worth seeing. As we walked through the gallery of paintings and photography, I was struck by the larger than life portraits of gangsters, wrestlers, musicians and politicians. These were not small, nor were they intended to be. These were life-sized portraits of people that you may not have ever heard of, but David could use the large scale to show off their true character.
“I don’t necessarily want to make a statement about these men,” David told me. “I want to show them as they are.”
I think that’s a great way to take a photograph, and a great way to keep a portrait alive. Because the portrait doesn’t have to tell a story about the subject, it can simply be what the subject is, a part of the real world.
